Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis, occurs most often in older people above 60 years. It is the most common joint condition in which cartilage in joints breaks down, causing the bones within the joint to rub together leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling of joints. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in knees, hips, spine and hands.

Symptoms

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Pain in affected joint
  • Joint stiffness
  • This might be caused by soft tissue inflammation around the joint.
  • Feel tenderness when you apply light pressure near affected joint.
  • Loss of flexibility.
  • Crackling Sounds
  • Bone spurs

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease marked by inflammation and pain in the joints of the hands, feet, wrists, elbows, knees and ankles. The typical case of rheumatoid arthritis begins insidiously, with the slow development of signs and symptoms over weeks to months. Often the patient first notices stiffness in one or more joints, usually accompanied by pain on movement and by tenderness in the joints of hands and fingers. The shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles are also affected in many patients.

Symptoms

In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body.

  • Joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity.
  • Tender, warm, swollen joints
  • Fatigue, fever and loss of appetite

Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including: Eyes, Lungs, Heart, Kidneys, Skin. Over time, rheumatoid arthritis can cause joints to deform and shift out of place.

Gouty Arthritis

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream. Pain and inflammation occur when too much uric acid crystallises and deposits in the joints. Symptoms of gout include severe pain, redness and swelling in joints, often the big toe. Attacks can come suddenly, often at night.

Symptoms:

  • An attack of gout can occur suddenly, often waking you up in the middle of the night with the sensation that your big toe is on fire.
  • Swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints of the big toe.
