Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease which causes inflammation and ulceration of inner lining of the colon and rectum. The inflammation usually begins in the rectum and sigmoid colon and spread upward to the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine.
Ulcerative colitis symptoms can vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs.
Signs and symptoms may include:
- Diarrhea, often with blood or pus
- Rectal bleeding — passing small amount of blood with stool
- Urgency to defecate
- Inability to defecate despite urgency
- Abdominal pain and cramping
- Rectal pain
- Weight loss
